Упражнение 1 . Вместо точек поставьте герундий или инфинитив.

1. When did you give up … ?
2. My colleague went on …
3. When did you intend … ?
4. As nobody interrupted me, I continued …
5. Is this book worth … ?
6. Since you easily catch bad colds, avoid …
7. You pronounce this word badly, try … it better.
8. He promised …. me with my project.
9. It is no easy thing to get up early in the morning when one is used to … until nine or ten o’clock.
10. We used to… rather early in the morning.

Упражнение 2 . Определите роль герундия в предложениях.

1) We avoid introducing into our prose words or phrases that awaken commonplace or ugly associations. 2) The other man went straight on without looking back. 3) They stressed the importance of solving problems as soon as possible. 4) Camping out in rainy weather is not pleasant. 5) It was no use wiping our shoes; the floor was so dirty. 6) Can you get at the meaning of a word without looking it up in a dictionary? 7) Thank you for helping me. 8) Studying Spanish will help me a lot in my career.

Упражнение 3 . Выделите герундиальные обороты с их субъектом. Определите их роль в предложении. Передайте содержание герундиальных оборотов придаточными предложениями в тех случаях, когда это возможно.

1) The general shout was the signal of Mr. Pickwick’s having woken up. 2) His coming down on Sunday is really no excuse for his not writing on Saturday. 3)I remember his being terribly upset once.

Упражнение 4 . Определите, чем выражен субъект герундиального оборота.

1) The lower part of the town was under water owing to the river having overflowed. 2) He was sorry for Jolyon losing his boy. (Glsw.) 3) George said that he would protest against Harris having a bath. (J. J.) 4) He must have been aware of me standing in the doorway. 5) When a long moment went by without Gideon answering, Brother Peter said… (F.) 6) Somebody suggested going on a walking tour in July; on its being mentioned, everybody present applauded.
